Anna and the Other Train

Anna travels to Moscow in winter to help her brother. At the station, many travellers watch the elegant Black woman. There she meets the young officer Vronski. A red scarf lies beside the tracks because a worker has just died.

Two days later, Anna attends a grand ball. She knows young Kitty expects Vronski's attention. Even so, Anna dances with him. As they turn, the other guests almost disappear, but their curious looks remain.

Back in Saint Petersburg, Karenin warns his wife about a possible scandal. Public opinion matters most to him. Anna explains that society has always judged her more harshly. Her elegant marriage only protects her when she follows every rule.

Vronski follows Anna and waits for her one night in the garden. He promises to leave everything for her. Anna says they will not pay the same price. The affair will seem romantic for him, but it could destroy her life. Even so, she kisses him.

During a horse race, Vronski falls. Anna shouts his name and reveals her feelings. Men admire Vronski's passion. Anna, however, loses friends and invitations. A newspaper even attacks the colour of her skin.

Anna leaves her husband and lives with Vronski in the countryside. She soon discovers that he is still welcome everywhere. She can hardly visit anyone. With her friend Lisa, Anna discusses a dangerous plan for the first time: she wants to disappear.

At Moscow station, Anna leaves her black coat beside the tracks. She ties the red scarf to a post where everyone can see it. A train passes through the steam. Later, witnesses believe Anna has died. But she crosses a tunnel to another platform.

A southbound train waits on the other track. Anna boards with a false passport and uses her mother's name. She thinks about her children and knows that freedom also brings guilt. However, she now decides for herself where her journey goes.
